• A common Malayo-Polynesian language of the Austronesian language family is spoken widely in Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and other nearby areas. It is in general called Malay, but is now known as the Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian language) in Indonesia, the Bahasa Malaysia (Malaysian language) in Malaysia, or simply the Bahasa Kebangsaan (national language).

• Malay is said to have developed as a trading language, now called "Malayu Pasar" (Bazaar Malay), used by the people of different ethnic backgrounds. Its oldest record goes back to a 7th century stone inscription written in the Pallava script of southern Indian origin, during the time of Srivijaya Kingdom which had its center near Palembang on southern Sumatra Island. As the Islamic religion spread from Sumatra to the Malay Peninsula in about 1300 A.D. and to Java and other islands (except Bali) later, the Arabic script (also called Jawi) came to be used.

• In 1511, Portugal conquered the Sultanate of Malacca. In 1614, the Netherlands replaced Portugal to conquer Malacca and other areas, and in 1619 established Batavia, present-day Jakarta. In 1795, Great Britain conquered Malacca. Since then, English and Dutch made an influence to the Malay vocabulary and the writing system, because Great Britain and the Netherlands colonized the Malay Peninsula and the Indonesian islands, respectively. Malay is now written in the 26-letter English/Dutch alphabet.

• As Indonesia and Malaysia became independent after World War II, Malay became the national language of these states. An Indonesia-Malaysia accord has since 1972 produced a common writing method, by using the consonant spelling in a more Malaysian/British way and the vowel spelling in a more Indonesian way, For Indonesian, the new (old) spellings are: y (j), j (dj as in Djakarta), c (tj), ny (nj), sy (sj), kh (ch), u (oe as in Soerakarta), etc. For Malaysian, the new (old) spellings are: c (ch), sepuluh (sapuloh, meaning "ten"), putih (puteh, meaning "white"), etc. Two sound values are placed on the vowel "e": a strong "e" (which used to be spelled e with a round hacek /round inverted ^/ in Malaysian or e with an acute accent in Indonesian) and a weak e (which may be pronounced as a weak "u.")

• Modern Malay is said to be very simple to learn, to speak and to write. There are no definite or indefinite articles like English "the" or "a," or no transitive verb "to be." "Buku baik" in Malay could mean "the book (buku) is good (baik)" or "the good book." The plural form of a noun is the same as the singular form, or sometimes it is repeated as in "barang-barang" meaning English "things." The possessive case of a noun is shown by placing it after the noun that it describes, as in "rumah aku" (my house) or "rumahku," where "-ku" is the short form of "aku" (my). The Malay verbs are not conjugated according to the present perfect, past or future tense. The tense of the verb is understood by the context of the sentense or by adding such words as "kemarin" (yesterday), "sudah" (already), "besok" (tomorrow), etc.

• "Bengawan Solo" (The Solo River) is a song brought to Japan by the Japanese returnees from Indonesia at the end of World War II in 1945. It became extremely popular in Japan as "an Indonesian folk song" because of its beautiful melody, and especially after it was sung by Toshi Matsuda and others on radio.

  It turned out later that this song had been written in 1940 by Gesang Martohartono, a resident of eastern Java. Later he made a glorious visit to Japan in 1980. The first two stanzas quoted above mean: "The Solo River! Its history has long since attracted our hearts. During the dry season, it has little water, but during the rainy season, it is flooded with water."

Javanese

Javanese is spoken by the people of central and eastern Java Island.

• The Javanese dialect spoken in Yogyakarta (Jogja) or Surakarta (Solo) in central Java is considered the standard Javanese because they were historically the capital cities of the Javanese culture.

• Javanese is known for having two "status styles" of expression: regular (shown in dictionaries as N for Ngoko) and respect (K for Krama, pronounced "kromo"). There are about 900 Krama words that are used in a respect style. In addition, about 500 modesty (KI for Krama Inggil) words can be mixed into the regular or respect styles. There are also a smaller number of middle (Madya, pronounced "madyo") words that sit between the regular and respect styles.

• Javanese were written in the Javanese characters, consisting of 20 consonants and Sandangan vowel accents, that had come from Pali of India. It later used the Arabic script as Islam spread to Jawa, and lately uses the Roman alphabet.

Sundanese

Sundanese (Basa Sunda) is spoken in western Java (Jawa Barat), which includes the cities of Jakarta and Bandung. Like Javanese, Sundanese uses about 300 words showing respect to the person that you are speaking to.

Filipino

The 1987 amendment of the Constitution of the Philippines declared Filipino as the national language. It is based on Tagalog, spoken widely on central and southern Luzon Island, which includes the capital city of Manila, and Mindoro Island. Its alphabet consists of 28 letters (26 letters of the English alphabet, plus NG and Ñ).

Cebuano

Visayan (or Bisaya) is spoken widely in the Visayan islands of Sebu (which includes the Philippines' second largest city of Cebu), Bohol, Negros and Leyte, sandwiched between Luzon Is. in the north and Mindanao Is. in the south. Its varation in Cebu is called Cebuano.

• ブルネイ、インドネシア、マレーシア、および近隣の地域では、アウストロネシア語族に属するマラヨ・ポリネシア語が広く使われています。この言葉は一般にマレー語と呼ばれていますが、現在インドネシアではバハサ・インドネシア(インドネシア語)、マレーシアではバハサ・マレーシア(マレーシア語)、または単にバハサ・クバンサーン(国語)と呼んでいます。

• マレー語はこの地域の商業用語「ムラユ・パサル」（バザールで話されるムラユ）として自然に発達したと言われています。1番古い文献としては、スマトラ島南部のパレンバン近くを中心として栄えたシュリヴィジャヤ国の時代に、南インド起源のパッラヴァ文字を使ったもの(紀元7世紀)があります。イスラム教がスマトラからマレー半島に1300年頃広まり、また後にジャワおよびその他の島々に広まるにつれて、アラビア文字(「ジャウィ」と呼ばれる)が使われました。

• 1511年、ポルトガルはマラッカ・スルタン王国を征服しました。1614年にはオランダがポルトガルに代わりマラッカ王国を征服し、他の地域も占領し、1619年にバタビア府(現在のジャカルタ)を建設しました。1795年にはイギリスがマラッカを占領。こうして英国とオランダがそれぞれマレー半島とインドネシア諸島を植民地としたので、英語とオランダ語もマレー語の語彙と書き方に影響を与えました。マレー語は現在、英文アルファベット26文字(オランダ語も同じ文字)で書きます。

• 第2次大戦後インドネシアとマレーシアが独立するに従って、マレー語は国語となりました。インドネシアとマレーシアの合意により、1972年からは共通の正書法を使っています。子音表現はマレーシア風(英語風)、母音表現はインドネシア風になったといわれています。インドネシア語の新しい(古い)スペルは、y(j)、j(dj、例 Djakarta)、c(tj)、ny(nj)、sy(sj)、kh(ch)、u(oe、例 Soerakarta)などです。マレーシア語では、c(ch)、sepuluh(sapuloh 十)、putih(puteh 白い)などです。母音eには、「エ」(以前はインドネシアではeの上に鋭アクセント、マレーシアではeの上に丸いハチェック/逆^の丸いもの/で表現していた)と弱い「ウ」との2つの音価が与えられました。

• 現代マレー語は、学ぶのも話すのも書くのも非常に簡単であるといわれています。英語の定冠詞「the」や不定冠詞「a」、連動詞「to be」に相当するものはありません。「Boku baik」は「いい(baik)本(buku)」とも「その本はいい」とも解釈できます。名詞の複数形は単数形と同じか、時には「barang-barang」(物事)のように単数形を繰り返します。名詞の所有格は「rumah aku」(私の家)または「rumahku」(-kuはakuの所有を表わす短縮形)のように、その名詞が修飾する言葉のうしろにつけます。マレー語の動詞は現在完了、過去、未来などの時制により変化することはありません。動詞の時制は文章の内容で理解するか、「kemarin」(きのう)、「sudah」(すでに)、「besok」(あした)などの言葉を追加して表わします。

• 「ブンガワン・ソロ」 (ソロ川)の歌は、第2次世界大戦後終了の1945年以降、インドネシアから帰還した日本人により日本へもたらされました。美しいメロディーと特に「歌のオバサン」松田トシさんらによりラジオで歌われたので、日本では「インドネシア民謡」として非常に人気があります。

  後に、この歌はジャワ西部に住むゲサン・マルトハルトノさんにより1940年に作詞・作曲されたことが分り、彼は1980年に来日して他の歌も披露しました。上に書いた1・2番の歌詞の意味は、次のようなものです。「ソロ川よ。その長い歴史は、人々の心に刻まれている。乾季には水はほとんどなく、雨季には水であふれる。」

ジャワ語

ジャワ語はジャワ島中東部に住んでいる人々によって話されています。

• ジャワ島中部のヨグヤカルタ(ジョクジャ)またはスラカルタ(ソロ)が歴史的にジャワ文化の中心があったので、この近辺の方言が標準ジャワ語といわれています。
• ジャワ語(バサ・ジャワ)には日本語の尊敬語に相当するものがあり、普通語(ンゴコ)に対して、約900語の尊敬語(クロモ)があります。また約500語の謙譲語(クロモ・インギル)があり、ンゴコ体またはクロモ体に混ぜて使われます。ンゴコ体とクロモ体の中間にあたるマディヨ体用の言葉も少数あります。
• ジャワ語は古くは、インドのパーリ語から来たといわれるジャワ文字(子音20個と、サンダンガンとよばれる母音符号からなる)を使っていました。イスラム教の到来と共にアラビア文字(ジャウィと呼ぶ)を使うようになり、近代はローマ字を使っています。

スンダ語

スンダ語(Basa Sunda)は、ジャカルタおよびバンドンを含む西部ジャワ(Jawa Barat)行政州で話されています。ジャワ語と同じように、約300語の敬語用単語があります。

フィリピノ語

フィリピン憲法の1987年修正により、フィリピノ語が国語に指定されました。フィリピノ語は、首都マニラを含むルソン島中南部、ミンドロ島などで広く話されているタガログ語(Tagalog)がもとになっています。書き方は28文字のアルファベットということになっていて、英語のアルファベットにNGとティルデ付きN(N〜)を追加しています。

セブアノ語

北のルソン島と南のミンダナオ島にはさまれたビサヤン諸島、つまりセブ島(フィリピン第2の都市セブがある)、ボホル島、ネグロス島、レイテ島などで広く使われている言葉をビサヤ語と呼び、特にセブの言葉をセブアノ語と呼んでいます。
